October is Walk to School Month

Join millions of other pupils across the world to promote and celebrate the joys of walking during International Walk to School Month.

But why walk to school? For starters it helps children meet the recommended level of physical activity and reduces the risk of obesity and related diseases. Also, studies show that children who participate in regular physical activity have increased stamina, are more alert and perform better academically.

Walking to primary school allows children to develop crucial road safety skills and greater spatial awareness early on - skills they can rely on when they start travelling more independently, for example to secondary school. It also allows them to engage actively with their local community and develop wider social networks.

Walk to School Month is the perfect opportunity to encourage pupils, parents and staff to try out a healthier, sustainable and more enjoyable means of school travel.

Sustrans Free Range Kids site is packed full of information, tips and ideas on how to encourage children to walk to school.

Why not join others and support our Free Range Kids campaign. We’re putting pressure on local councils to create communities where children can travel around more safely and independently. We want to see 20mph speed limits in residential areas and investment in local walking and cycling routes, particularly to school.
