Monitoring and evaluation
Local authorities should develop a robust system for monitoring and evaluating cycling and walking throughout their area to demonstrate the effectiveness of investment and to enable targets to be set for future growth. Cycle flows should be measured before and after the introduction of all new cycle tracks and lanes. Provision for the installation of automatic counters should be included in cycling scheme budgets to enable a network of data collection points to be established. A variety of tools, including automatic cycle counters, are used by Sustrans' Research and Monitoring Unit.Sustrans' Research and Monitoring Unit has pioneered the development of monitoring and evaluation techniques for sustainable and active modes of transport. We monitor and evaluate outcomes and assess the impacts of our work, and we evaluate the interventions of partners and clients across the UK. We also undertake research and evaluation collaborations with consultant and academic groups.
Our aim is to establish effective, valid and rigorous ways of measuring the effectiveness of a wide range of interventions. Along with others, we are developing a robust body of evidence assessing the value of sustainable and active mode travel.
