Cycle routes that are essentially on street can provide an advantage for cyclists by exempting them from access restrictions applied to motor traffic or through the creation of short connections only available to cyclists and pedestrians.
Examples of these are included in the Cycling England Design Guidance:
- A.05 Exemptions to Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) (pdf): Cyclists should be exempt from restrictions within all TROs, including banned turns and road closures, unless there are proven safety reasons for not doing so
- B.01 Connections and Links (pdf): The measures available to create cycle links can range from a cycle gap in a road closure to the construction of a new bridge. Cycle links should be clearly signed, direct and relevant to cyclists' needs
