The impact of Sustrans' work

Sustrans works with families, communities, policy-makers and partner organisations so that people are able to choose healthier, cheaper, cleaner journeys, with better places and spaces to move through and live in.

Why? Well, we think that the way that we travel needs to change. But more than that, we can see the positive impacts that our work has had, and is having, on those people that it affects.

Here are just some of the changes that we saw in 2011 alone

  • The UK took to its feet (and pedals) with a 15% increase in trips on the National Cycle Network. In total, 484 million journeys were made by 3.3 million individuals. Just the health benefits of all this activity were worth £442m.
  • 340,000 pupils in 1,400 schools worked with us resulting in an 80% increase in the number of children regularly cycling to school and a 100% increase in those cycling every day.
  • 20,000 households received tailored travel information leading to increases of up to 21% in walking, 31% in cycling and 25% in public transport use, and reductions of up to 11% in car use. The largest personalised travel planning programme in the UK began in Wales, aiming to reach 100,000 households.
