Working with the education sector

Schools

When we started working with Sustrans, only 1% of children cycled regularly and we had no cycle storage. Now 23% cycle and we have sufficient storage for 40 bikes

- Chris Donovan,
Headteacher, St Anne’s Catholic Primary School

The school run is a major source of congestion during the morning peak, with as many as one in five cars on the road taking children to school. In addition, childhood obesity is at record levels while school transport budgets are facing an unprecedented squeeze.

Increasing levels of active travel offers a solution to all of these challenges. Over 140 of our officers work with over 2,400 schools to inspire big increases in walking, cycling and scooting.

Universities and colleges

Car use and parking on the journey to university or college can have an impact on student health and well-being and the image of the university or college within the local community.

From providing professional support to travel or estates practitioners to working directly with young people to improve their skills and confidence, Sustrans team can provide value-for-money solutions to improve walking and cycling access to sites and establish healthy and low carbon travel habits for life.
