Mapping the potential for change
A detailed understanding of the potential for travel behaviour change is essential to delivery of effective programmes and value for money. We can help identify priorities, target quick wins and show what will work where. We can do this at a range of scales from individual corridors to whole city regions, enabling you to visualise and plan at a strategic level.
Cycling strategy development
We can help you to develop ambitious, evidence-based strategies, looking beyond incremental improvements towards achieving real increases in cycling. Strategies are linked to realistic, costed and timed action plans to deliver your vision. Sustrans can also support delivery through our own programmes and technical support, such as cycle guidance and network planning.
Developing the business case
Sustrans has unique expertise in modelling the costs and benefits of sustainable transport options, both in terms of standard transport appraisal methodologies (i.e. Benefit to Cost Ratios) and other local priorities (e.g. local economic impacts). We can assist decision makers to compare options and identify priorities on the basis of robust information about costs and benefits. We can also provide technical assistance with bid writing.
Developing and supporting leadership
Significant political and senior support is needed to make sustainable travel an integral part of long term-strategic and investment planning. Sustrans can work with senior officials and elected members to foster a better understanding of how sustainable travel can deliver local economic, well-being and quality of life objectives. We can offer a tailored programme of strategy and visioning events, seminars, full or half-day training sessions, as well as UK and European benchmarking visits and study tours.
Engaging with local stakeholders such as cycling campaigners is time-consuming, but valuable in identifying strategic priorities, quick wins for cycling improvements, making sure that facilities are fit for purpose, and getting local community support. Sustrans draws on an existing network of contacts and our own expertise to generate timely and deliverable input from stakeholders. We can engage stakeholders through facilitating a range of processes and formats, from one-off events and exhibitions to ongoing advisory groups.
