Our 'Better by Design' accredited courses, are endorsed by The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and will count towards your Continued Professional Development, while the addition of our new 'Traffic free routes' course provides a cost-effective way to develop your skills and knowledge in this specialist area.

Sustrans’ Better by Design course encourages participants to think more like a cyclist, and to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to providing cycle routes, particularly in congested urban areas. The course is the most comprehensive and well-structured cycle design course I have attended.

Engineer, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Our Courses

  • Better by Design 1: Essential Skills

We focus on the principles of designing for cyclists in a highway environment and the practical application of these principles.

  • Better by Design 2: Design Processes

We look at the procedures involved in the development of cycle infrastructure, including network development, audits, legislation and regulations.

  • Better by Design 3: Design Practice

We cover the practical issues involved when applying design guidance to develop high quality infrastructure for cycling on links, junctions and crossings.

  • Traffic free routes

We take a  detailed look at what it takes to create high quality traffic free routes, the constraints, how to apply realistic solutions to feasibility reports as well as to ongoing and planned construction projects.

Who is the training for?

The training programme is for professionals involved in the development and design of cycle-friendly highway schemes and off-road routes and networks. Over the last six years we’ve trained hundreds of professionals and practitioners in local authorities, not-for-profit organisations and consultancies.
