Route design resources

This part of the website is being developed to provide professionals and other interested people such as community groups with easy access to extensive current advice on the best ways to design and build routes for people to walk and cycle as part of their everyday lives and when out for fresh air and enjoyment.

Sustrans has over 30 years experience of creating routes for people, working in partnership with organisations in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors across the UK. We do practical projects that encourage more travel by sustainable modes of transport, and we know that encouraging more people to change their travel behaviour means making their journeys attractive, convenient and safe, whether they share the road with traffic or use separate paths.

You can access information from a wide range of sources in the UK and abroad from here. Some of it is published by Sustrans, but much comes from other organisations and these pages serve as a handy gateway to advice from these sources.

This section gives you access to:

  • design guidance
  • construction advice and details
  • case studies
  • photographs

In addition, we provide links to other useful information that shows how to encourage more walking and cycling, for example evidence of the benefits, as well as specific projects that share this focus.

We want to make this a useful resource for anyone involved in the design, building or maintenance of infrastructure that encourages people to walk or cycle; we would very much value suggestions for improvements to the content.  Please send these to designandconstruction@sustrans.org.uk
