Windrush Valley

This is a delightful journey through the Cotswold countryside. It begins in Witney and ends at the historic town of Northleach.

Transport yourself from the bustle of Witney to the quiet lanes of the Windrush Valley in the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

On your way to the market town of Northleach, you will pass within half a mile of the ruins of Minster Lovell Hall. This was once the home of Richard III's henchman, Lord Lovell, who was one of the richest men in England.

From here you travel on to Burford, one of the most picturesque towns in England. This charming town is home to a medieval bridge, old stone houses and Georgian and Tudor frontages.

Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', it remains steeped in history and is a great place to shop for antiques.

After leaving Burford, the route travels near to Barrington Park. This is an 18th-century landscaped park of around 120 hectares.

The route then continues past Windrush, and onto Sherborne. This is a 17th-century grandstand and Cotswold country estate. It became the National Trust's first restoration project in 1998.

Sherborne is also a working estate and has an abundance of wildlife; from fallow and roe deer to badgers and foxes.

The route arrives in Northleach, a small unspoilt Cotswold town standing at the crossroads of the Roman Fosse Way.

Here it is worth visiting the 'House of Correction', a former prison which was first opened in 1792. Also the impressive church of St Peter and Paul, which boasts the finest example of the Cotswold perpendicular style.
