The ruins of the 12th century Kendal Castle are worth exploring before you set off. The hilltop location provides great views over Kendal. Kendal is also home to the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry, which allows you to discover how people have lived in the Lake District and how the unique landscape has shaped their lives.
Pick up the cycle route at the old canal head directly below Kendal Castle. Follow the cycle path along the old canal (now filled in) for a couple of miles, then join Natland Road and follow signs for National Route 6 to Lancaster. At Natland keep following Route 6 onto Sedgwick, where the signs change to Route 70. Here you’ll pass the National Trust’s Sizergh Castle and Gardens. Still lived in by the Strickland family, Sizergh combines traditional fine furniture with modern touches.
The route continues past the Gilpin Bridge Inn, where you avoid having to cross the busy A590 by using a parallel minor road that takes you onto Witherslack. By the Derby Arms there is a crossroads where you turn left, then bear right just before the route joins the dual carriageway. Go through a tunnel under the carriageway that takes you onto Meathop. Here you pass Meathop Fell and travel over the River Winster. You follow the route into Grange-over-Sands on the B5277, past the golf course. To your left, there is a footbridge to the railway station.
