Bike to school events
Get pupils, parents and staff geared up for cycling to school by organising a bike themed event.
The recipe for success
Set the wheels in motion by trying the following ideas:
Hold a bike breakfast. These create a big buzz with pupils and their families. Bacon butties, veggie sausages, fresh fruit and juice make a breakfast of champions. Local supermarkets might be persuaded to contribute.
Arrange a raffle with bike-related prizes. A raffle ticket system works as an incentive and helps you record the number of cyclists, whilst parents cycling can earn an extra ticket for their child... the more they cycle, the better their chance of winning! Local bike shops are great places to go for prizes like bike bells and reflective bands - they may even donate a bike to give away as a grand prize.
Launch a cycle train. This is the cycling equivalent of a walking bus where parents and children cycle to school as a group. You could even compete with local schools to see who has the longest cycle train!
Run a poster or banner competition. Let the pupils publicise the event to get them involved and excited.
Present certificates of achievement. Reward pupils for all their hard work by giving a short speech to congratulate them and do a hands-up count of those who want to continue cycling now they have tried it. Reward success, effort and enthusiasm.
Going the extra mile
Try the following ideas to make your bike bash even bigger:
Run family bike rides. Involving parents and carers in weekend or after-school rides has proved very popular.
Challenge pupils to 'bling' their bikes. Pupils show how much they love their wheels by decorating them for the day.
Hold 'go slow' races. Children test their cycle skills in the playground by cycling as slowly as they can.
Tot up the mileage. Set a target of how many miles the pupils and staff can cycle in a week. When added together the mileage could get pupils to Paris, or even further (well, virtually)!
