Sustrans work with families, communities, policy-makers and partner organisations so that people are able to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys, with better places and spaces to move through and live in. National charity working on behalf of pedestrians. Runs campaigns and initiatives, plus useful policy information.

Ramblers

National walking charity, working to safeguard the footpaths, the countryside and other places we go walking, and to encourage more people to take up walking. Visit the website for useful advice on baby and child carriers and walking when pregnant.

Walk for Life

Part of the NHS's Change For Life campaign. Lots of information for families on walking and keeping active.

Pushchair Walks

Details of tried and tested family-friendly pushchair walks throughout the UK.

Free information on walking routes that are suitable for parents with buggies and young children.

Cycling

Sustrans' Bike Belles booklet (pdf) is aimed at women who want to start cycling.

National Cycle Network

Over 13,000 miles of routes throughout the UK on traffic-free paths, quiet roads and traffic-calmed streets.

Bike4Life

Part of the NHS's Change4Life campaign. Lots of information and downloads to encourage parents to get their kids cycling.

Cycling proficiency for the 21st century, designed to give children the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

Bikeforall

A joint initiative of the Bicycle Association and the Association of Cycle Traders offering advice on all aspects of cycling.

CTC

National organisation, working to protect and promote the rights of cyclists. Website includes advice on encouraging children to cycle.

Play England

National organisation working for all children and young people in England to have regular access and opportunity for free, inclusive, local play provision. Runs campaigns and projects and has background information about play on website.

Playday

The national day for play, traditionally celebrated on the first Wednesday in August, coordinated by Play England.

Part of the NHS's Change4Life campaign, lots of information for parents on encouraging active play.

Streets Alive

Organisation working in communities to build relationships between neighbours. It is also the national group promoting street parties at all times of the year. 

The school journey

Safe Routes to Schools

Sustrans' School Travel team encourages children to walk and cycle to school through a range of practical and educational measures. Lots of information for teachers and parents.

Bike It

Sustrans' Bike It has 60 expert Bike It officers in hundreds of schools, helping over 120,000 children cycle safely to school.

Local neighbourhoods and campaigning

Quality Streets

Sign up to Sustrans' Quality Streets campaign which is asking local councillors to reduce speed limits to 20 miles per hour and involve local residents in street planning and design.

Aims to highlight the impacts of speed through sound research and effective advocacy.
