How we are funded

As a registered charity, Sustrans is dependent on funding from a wide range of sources to keep our work going. These include contributions from our tens of thousands of committed Supporters, as well as grants from sources including charitable trusts and companies, the Big Lottery Fund, the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme, local and central government (including the devolved governments in Wales and Scotland and government departments in Northern Ireland), Non-Departmental Public Bodies, and the European Union.

Significant financial support from the Millennium Commission was key to building the first 5,000 miles of the National Cycle Network, whilst further input has come from the cycle industry including the Bicycle Association, the Association of Cycle Traders and the Consortium of Bicycle Retailers.

In all our work we try and maximise the effectiveness of our actions by not only creating new routes and projects ourselves, but by persuading other bodies to jointly or independently fund similar schemes.

Sustrans patrons include TV presenter Jeremy Paxman, author Dervla Murphy, and Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman MBE. If you feel strongly about the work we do, please consider becoming a Sustrans Supporter - we need you!
