Better public transport
Increase public transport usage by improving and integrating services and reducing fares
Regular, reliable and affordable public transport would change lives. Ensuring integration between buses, trains, trams and coaches, as well as walking and cycling would mean smarter travel choices for longer journeys too.
Evidence suggests that public transport has the potential to replace 21% of existing car journeys in urban areas around the UK. What's stopping people? Expensive fares, the need to pay twice to change and complete your journey, and the notion that public transport, particularly bus travel, is not very pleasant to use and takes more time.
Improving all of these areas would make public transport more attractive and inclusive for the significant number of people who cannot afford to run a car. Investing in affordable and reliable public transport not only extends smarter travel choices, it also enables people to leave their car behind and travel more sustainably.
This is why, as part of our call to action, Sustrans calls on UK governments to:
- Introduce national travel cards, building on the success of the Oyster Card in London and travel cards in other cities, to enable greater flexibility, choice and integration.
- Provide more demand-responsive transport services to people living in urban and rural areas so that they can choose to travel sustainably.
